Our Practice
Advisory built on careful
attention and clear scope.
Tessera was founded on the belief that good consulting is unhurried, specific, and honest about where its remit ends. We work with organisations that share that preference.

How Tessera came to be
Tessera was established in Kuala Lumpur with a straightforward premise: that a small number of well-defined advisory services, delivered consistently and honestly, is more valuable than a broad catalogue of vaguely described offerings.
The name comes from the individual tile of a mosaic — a single piece that contributes to a larger whole. It reflects how the practice sees its role: not as the architect of the whole picture, but as the person who can help clarify a particular part of it.
The practice focuses on three types of engagement: operational planning for family firms navigating generational transition, mapping of B2B partnership landscapes, and preparation and facilitation for leadership off-sites. Each service has a fixed scope, a defined output, and a clear end point.
Our Mission
What we are here to do
The practice exists to give organisations in Malaysia access to focused operational thinking that does not require a long-term retainer or an open-ended scope. The clients who work with Tessera typically have specialist advisors already — lawyers, accountants, HR consultants — and want something different: a clear-eyed external view of the operational question in front of them.
Work is conducted at a pace that matches the client's situation. There is no pressure toward a larger engagement, and no implied criticism of the advisors already in place. The aim is to leave the client with something usable — a document, a map, a summary — that they own and can act on independently.
Honest scope
The practice is clear about what it does and what it does not do. Regulated advice sits elsewhere; the operational work is what Tessera is for.
Careful attention
Understanding a client's situation properly — before recommending anything — is the first and most important part of the work.
Usable outputs
Every engagement ends with a document the client keeps. The value of the work should not depend on the consultant staying in the room.

How We Work
Standards that shape every engagement
Confidentiality as standard
An NDA is in place before any substantive exchange. Client information is not referenced in any external material. Notes and documents belong to the client.
Written project briefs
Every engagement begins with a written project brief that sets out scope, deliverables, timeline, and fee. Both parties sign before work starts.
No scope creep
If the work requires an extension, that is a separate conversation. The original brief is not quietly expanded; hours are not added without agreement.
Senior-led delivery
The consultant named at the start of an engagement does the work. There is no hand-off to a junior associate mid-project without prior discussion.
Clear on what we are not
Tessera does not provide legal counsel, financial planning, or regulated advice of any kind. This boundary is maintained consistently across every engagement.
Data protection
Client data is handled in accordance with Malaysian data protection requirements. Digital files are stored securely and access is limited to the assigned consultant team.
Our Approach
Operational advisory for Malaysian businesses
Family-held businesses in Malaysia occupy a distinctive position in the economy. Many are multi-generational, built on relationships and sector knowledge accumulated over decades. They face questions that do not have standard answers — and the most pressing of those questions are often operational and relational before they become legal or financial.
Tessera works in that space. The practice supports family firms in thinking through how leadership and decision-making authority should be organised as a business grows or as circumstances change. That work is separate from the succession legal structures that lawyers and accountants address; it concerns the human and operational dimensions that sit upstream of those instruments.
B2B partnership work follows a similar pattern. Businesses in Malaysia and the broader ASEAN region operate through dense webs of distribution and channel relationships. Understanding which of those relationships are productive, which are under-used, and where new ones might be worth developing is a practical operational question — one that benefits from a structured external review rather than internal assumption.
Leadership facilitation completes the practice's offering. A well-designed off-site is not simply a meeting held outside the office. The preparation — understanding each participant's perspective before the day, designing an agenda that works through rather than around disagreement — is where most of the value lies. Tessera brings that preparation discipline to leadership teams across Kuala Lumpur and the wider Malaysian business community.
